The Shins Live in Tokyo

Posted on January 31, 2005
The Shins, Astro Hall Tokyo
Masako and I made the trek to Harajuku tonight for The Shins concert. It took a bit of arm twisting but I think the concept of not having to watch the musicians on a JumboTron intrigued her. The Shins played an excellent set, nicely mixing songs from both studio albums and a few from older EP's I hadn't heard before. The bass player (Dave Hernandez) wore a cast on his right arm, exposing only the ends of his fingers just allowing him to play. Marty Crandall (keyboards) said something about bones sticking out of the flesh, but I think that was just some comic relief, which he seemed to be in-charge of. That reminds me, can you actually buy nipple tape?

And they finished with one of my favourites, One By One All Day from Oh Inverted World, sporting pig, frog, and monkey masks. Apologies for the horrible photo. A phone-cam pic is all I could get away with.

Hey Mark, weren't they fantastic! I think we were standing right next to each other. Actually, was that Frankie with you? I remember seeing a 2 year old just a few people away. The beauty of smoke-free, sensible sound-level venues - so child friendly!

That was you? No shit. When we left I told Masako I thought I recognised someone outside. You were talking with two other people outside the hall right? And no, that wasn't us with the kid. I guess they couldn't get a baby-sitter, I'll wait till she's a bit older for the rock concerts :-).

If that was you on Monday I think I also passed by you on the stairs near the Ginza line at Shibuya station yesterday a little after 4pm.

Yes, I was outside the gig afterwards talking to my friends Jenn and Dave, and yes, I walk that route in Shibuya station every week day a little after 4. Crazy. Was i carrying a big box? (sending my brothers new baby a present.)
