Collateral
I especially enjoyed the added touch of Audioslaves's song Shadow on the Sun on the varied soundtrack along side Miles Davis (which I will learn to appreciate in time). There seemed to be a lack of hype surrounding this movie here, and I feel it aided my enjoyment from having no overblown expectations --- take note Wachowski brothers.
My wife was on the Internet a few hours ago checking out the soundtrack. We dropped off the baby at Grandma's and went to see it yesterday. I fell asleep at MI2 (didn't see the first one) but Collateral was a good ride. The jiving over who knew the best route at the beginning was very L.A. and let me ease out of my "I hate action movies" attitude. I was wondering if there were going to be nostalgic Miami Vice-like scenes, and indeed Mann put in plenty of late night driving through quiet, empty streets with that distant synth sound playing wistfully in the background, that sound that I associate with Don Jonson in his Ferrari Daytona. It was fun, but a bit odd to be made to feel nostalgic for SoCal.

I trust you've seen Heat... I love Mann's aesthetic and soundtrack design. I really enjoyed Collateral not so much for Cruise, who was actually not bad (if only because he was playing against type), but for Mann's camerawork and the off-kilter style of his writing. Evidently he used special super-duper-hi-fi digital cameras for night shots to max out available light.

Heat's a classic. Masako hasn't seen it so I think I might rent it again. Look's like Mann is working on the next Miami Vice movie, and Jamie Foxx is playing Tubbs.
