it's been almost 5 months since i've made a post dedicated to frankie and it's well overdue. all photos taken with my new nikon fm3a on cheap 100 yen rolls of film from costco.

100yen films from costco?
i wonder what brand they are...
100 yen films from "daiso" used to be agfa films, and i loved using them. (i hear they're some other brand now.)

is there a "costco" in Japan? I need 100 yen films!!

sure costco is in japan. just go to costco.com and use the warehouse locator at the top of the page. the 100 yen rolls i was refering to were kodak super gold 400, 10 pack for 1,000 yen and change. they also had fuji 100 and fuji 400 for about the same price. i took a couple of photo with my phone to remember.

he looks like he's always very calm. does he cry very much compared to most babies? i can't wait till i have kids. i want 2 or 3. have you and your wife discussed if you guys were going to have anymore later in life?

sure she cries just like other babies. i know we picked a unisex name and her nickname of frankie doesn't really help either. i guess she is still in that stage were most people can not tell the sex. this is strange to me cause when i look at her i see my little girl, and recognized her feminine features.

She is too cute! Ethan was mistaken for a girl right until he was a year and a half !Sent Xmas presents to your Mom's!

mark-
very nice pics, great DOF (or lack of); see what I mean about that tiny sliver (first pic, with Franklie slightly out of focus; I have SO many like that :)....re: gender thing, we still get it, mixed up gender....doesn't bother me anymore, but did initially. I suppose it didn't help that the the "ka" ending for many Japanese still signifies a girl, or that for a while he was wearing a pink outfit. .... on another note, gotta get me to a Costco! 100 yen per roll for Kodak Gold, you gotta be kiddin

I love the way this film turned out, just love the color, and your cropping (or framing, whichever) is always interesting. When I do weddings, a lot of photographers are using old skool equipment like this.

way cute.

i know i've gotten a bit caried away with the deep DOF on a few shots but WOW does it ever make the subject stand out! I had all these and more features on my sony digital but who wants to go through 3 sets of menues and make sure you are on the right mode and user setting and blah, blah, blah... now i turn a dial where my hand is anyway, click the shutter and wind the film advance. simple and makes for a much more enjoyable experience. Nil, thanks for the comments. The film shots are not cropped at all though. That's another thing I enjoy more about film. Knowing I have to frame the shot perfect the first time, and getting exactly what I want in the frame cause there is no deleting and re-shooting.

Mark, nice photos!! I also love the lack of DOF - I have a really, really tough time doing this with my digicam (Sony F717). I think pro-sumer digicams just aren't set up to do this, which is frustrating. I am trying to find ways to do this in post, but so far I've been unsuccessful........

Erik, I also have the older sony model the F707, but never took the thing off of auto setting. The photo in this post were taken with an analog nikon fm3a and a 50mm f1.8 manual focus lens.

Ya - I have to play with this camera more, but to the extent that I have (and I've fiddle quite a bit w/ my Nikon cp800 & Olympus 3040 as well, both digi's) I'm really wishing it had such ability more easily acccessible.

Incidentally, there's a blog by another individual out here in San Francisco, whose photos you might enjoy - find the site at http://www.abeatexperience.com/experience/

Some of the stuff in his archives is gorgeous, and it's all digital. He sometimes does quite a lot of post work on certain shots.
